The Department of French Language and Literature was founded in 1954 as Department of French Studies within the Faculty of Letters of the University of Athens. The first chairs established were the Chair in French Language and Literature and the Chair in French Civilisation. In 1971, the University Senate decided to establish an independent Chair of French Language and Literature along with a study room, held by two assistants. The Department was placed under the supervision of the Dean of the Faculty of Letters. It was thanks to Law 1268/1982 that the Department finally became autonomous.
